Is my roof suitable for solar hot water?
A roof does not need to meet one fixed specification before solar hot water can be considered. The useful question is how your roof, hot water system and household use work together. Roof orientation affects the collection pattern
A south-facing roof is often favourable because it can receive strong sunlight across the day, but east and west-facing roof spaces may also be workable. The difference is when the solar panels receive the most sunlight. An east-facing arrangement tends to collect more earlier in the day, while a west-facing arrangement can perform more strongly later.
That matters because your hot water demand may not be evenly spread. A household using most of its hot water in the morning has different requirements from one that uses more after work. The best position is not necessarily the one that looks most convenient from the ground. It is the position that gives useful solar input while matching the way the cylinder is charged and the water is used.
North-facing roof areas are generally less favourable for solar collection. Even then, the decision should account for the available roof space and whether another section of roof, a flat roof frame or another suitable position is available.
Shading can matter more than direction
A well-oriented roof can still be a poor location if collectors are shaded for significant parts of the day. Chimneys, neighbouring buildings, trees, dormers and raised roof sections can all interrupt sunlight. Shadows can move across the roof, so a quick inspection from a garden or pavement may not show the full picture.
We look at the surrounding features as well as the roof itself. Partial shading does not automatically rule out an installation, but its position and extent affect the collector area, expected performance and whether another mounting position makes better sense. It is important to identify this before equipment is selected. Installing collectors first and discovering later that a chimney shades part of the array can leave you with a system that does not perform as intended.
Pitch, access and roof construction all change the answer
The roof angle influences how the collectors meet available sunlight and how they can be fixed securely. A pitched tiled roof may allow a different fixing approach from a slate roof, while a flat roof normally requires a properly designed frame. The mounting method must suit the roof covering and avoid creating unnecessary points where water could get in.
The roof also needs to be assessed as a structure, not just a surface. Collectors, frames and pipework create additional requirements for fixing and routing. The installer needs to understand where the roof is supported, how the pipes can reach the cylinder and whether the work can be carried out without damaging tiles, slates or roof edges.
This is why two properties with similar roof shapes may receive different recommendations. The installation route, roof covering, obstacles and internal layout all affect what is practical.
Your cylinder may decide whether the roof is usable
Solar hot water collectors need a compatible way to transfer heat into stored domestic hot water. An existing cylinder may be suitable, or it may need adapting or replacing if it cannot receive heat from the solar system. This is a key part of the survey because the roof and cylinder have to work as one system.
The cylinder location matters too. A roof with a convenient panel position may still involve a difficult route for the pipes to the airing cupboard or equipment area. Long or complicated runs can affect the design, insulation requirements and installation work. We also consider how the solar system will integrate with the existing boiler, so the boiler can provide supplementary hot water when solar input is insufficient.
Household demand affects the right system size
Suitability is not only about fitting collectors onto the largest available roof area. The system should reflect how much hot water your household uses and when that demand occurs. A large panel system paired with a small cylinder may not make effective use of the available heat. A smaller arrangement may be more appropriate where hot water demand is modest or roof space is restricted.

- Whether your existing cylinder can accept solar input
- Where internal pipework will run
- How the boiler will operate alongside the solar system
- How the design reflects your household hot water use
